Born near Hull on 27th October 1918, John Simpson started his career in local schoolboy football and represented Hull Boys before signing amateur forms with Hull City and playing several Reserve fixtures. He then had trials with Huddersfield Town and turned professional with them at the age of eighteen. He soon made his debut for Huddersfield in front of a 60,000 crowd at Maine Road Manchester, but like many other fine young footballers of the day his career was hindered by the Second World War. He became an Army Physical Training Instructor and Leeds United were just one club that he guested for in his time in the Army. Others werePlymouth Argyle, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Southampton, Leyton Orient and Aldershot. He went on to make over two hundred and fifty appearances for the Leeds Road club before York City paid a club record £1,000 to take him to Bootham Crescent on 12th March 1948. He made his debut the following day against Southport at Bootham Cresent. He went on to top the two hundred and fifty games mark for the Minstermen, before retiring after an eye injury in 1954. After a short while out of the game he joined Hull Citywhere he was coach for nine years, during which time the club avhieved promotion to the Second Division in 1959. After Hull he moved to Hartlepool Unitedfirst as coach and later as Manager, again guiding them to promotion in 1968. In 1971 he he became coach and physio at Cambridge United and during his time there the club were twice promoted.in 1973 and 1977. He joined York as trainer and physiotherapist in the summer of 1977 and the Testimonial was in anticipation of his retirement on his 65th birthay on 27th October 1983.

Programme:

The Leeds team was per programme and Eddie Gray was the Leeds substitute. Andy Ritchie scored the first Leeds goal after twenty minutes and Tommy Wright added two more in the second half with strikes in the eightieth and eighty-seventh minutes.
